» « I have just received a letter from a white brother in Texas. He writes: ‘All Christians know that the colored people will receive equal rights eventually, but it is possible that you are in too great a religious hurry.[…]’ Such an attitude stems from a tragic misconception of time, from the strangely irrational notion that there is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all ills. Actually, time itself is neutral; it can be used either destructively or constructively. More and more I feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than have the people of good will. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people. Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. »

» « I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. »

» « Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children. »

Citaĵo
« Dum mi parolis inter la senesperaj, malakceptitaj kaj koleraj junaj viroj, mi diris al ili, ke brulboteloj kaj fusiloj ne solvos iliajn problemojn. Mi klopodis oferti al ili mian plej profundan kompaton dum mi bontenadis mian konvinkon, ke socia ŝanĝo plej senchave okazas per senperforta agado. Iliaj demandoj ekhavis sencon, kaj mi eksciis, ke mi neniam denove povos paroli kontraŭ la perforto de la subprematoj en la getoj sen unue klare paroli al la plej granda liveranto de perforto en la mondo hodiaŭa — mia propra registaro» « As I have walked among the desperate, rejected and angry young men I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they asked — and rightly so — what about Vietnam? They asked if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today — my own government. »

» « The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism. »

» « We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together… you can’t really get rid of one without getting rid of the others… the whole structure of American life must be changed. »

» « The slums are the handiwork of a vicious system of the white society; Negroes live in them but do not make them any more than a prisoner makes a prison. Let us say boldly that if the violations of law by the white man in the slums over the years were calculated and compared with the law-breaking of a few days of riots, the hardened criminal would be the white man. These are often difficult things to say but I have come to see more and more that it is necessary to utter the truth in order to deal with the great problems that we face in our society. »

« La homo devas evoluigi por ĉiu homa konflikto metodon, kiu malakceptas venĝon, agreson kaj revenĝon. La fundamento de tia metodo estas amo» « (angle) Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. »

Ĝi ne plu estas elekto inter perforto kaj malperforto en ĉi tiu mondo; ĝi estas elekto inter neperforto aŭ neekzisto» « (angle) Men, for years now, have been talking about war and peace. But now, no longer can they just talk about it. It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it's nonviolence or nonexistence. »

Mi havas Revon[redakti]

Citaĵo
« Mi havas revon, ke iun tagon ĉi tiu nacio leviĝos kaj vivos laŭ la vera signifo de sia kredo: "Ni taksas ĉi tiujn veraĵojn memevidentaj: ke ĉiuj homoj estas kreitaj egalaj." » « (angle) I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. »
